The best plan out of recession: Immigration

The best way to come out of recession, Thomas L Friedman author of World is Flat and celebrated NY columnist says, is leave it to a brainy Indian to come up with the cheapest and surest way to stimulate US economy: immigration.

He points out that in this recessionary time US is trying to forget the very formula that made it a economic super power; a flexible and open economy.

A recent study by William R. Kerr of Harvard Business School and William F. Lincoln of the University of Michigan found that in periods when H-1B visa numbers went down, so did patent applications filed by immigrants [in the U.S.]. And when H-1B visa numbers went up, patent applications followed suit.”

While I get the point in his column there may have to be a balance between both the views especially when the job losses in US are going up at half-a-million a month.
