Power of Twitter in Social Networking (and the limits there of)

Twitter was formally thrust upon as the most powerful medium to communicate in recent global events, be it the Iranian revolution, Georgia or Mumabi 11/26 attacks. Twitter is probably not there yet. Twitter’s role in the Iranian revolution is interesting to read. Analysis proves that old fashioned SMS, local websites and word of mouth played larger impact.

But Twitter cannot be underestimated. Its future role as technology backbone for social revolutions is still intact. Twitter positioned itself as a tool (and not as a platform) that people can use to communicate. So it is difficult to censor, it is self correcting and it still serves as harbinger to the broader trends. But some problems with tweeting still remain. One could be made a unwitting victim of tweeters. Often the news remains unverified and often sensational.

Meanwhile students in Iran found a neat way to get over the 140 character limit in Twitter. They are just taking pictures of themselves standing with large banners containing messages and posting it on Twitter.

Happy Tweeting 🙂
