Food Inflation in India

Grab any news paper these days and we read about how the inflation is persistent in India, no matter how much the central bank tries to curtail the demand. Most economists argue that supply side economics are playing havoc with the inflation, especially so with the food items.

This is an excellent video from WSJ about how the prices of vegetables get marked-up as they travel over 145 miles from UP to Delhi and pass through 5 intermediaries in this journey. The prices in Delhi’s convenience store are an astounding 520% more than what the farmer got paid for the vegetables just 24 hours before they reached the store.
